Rehabiliation after Total Knee Arthroplasty

Abstract
The goal of knee joint replacement is to reduce pain, to improve functional capacity, to minimize the complications related to the surgery, and to maintain artificial joint as long as possible. These rehabilitation programs include preoperative patient education and postoperative rehabilitation. Preoperative rehabilitation may include strengthening of quadriceps and hamstring muscles, range of motion(ROM) exercise, and aerobic exercise. Preoperative patient education is important to reduce their anxiety and to reassure them. Postoperative rehabilitation for knee joint replacement surgery focus to following points: (1) recovery of mobility and strength, (2) reduction in pain, (3) prevention of surgery-related complications, (4) prescribing proper aids, (5) patient and family education, and (6) adjusting resource issue. One of the highest priority in postoperative rehabilitation is to regain the full ROM.
